By day, I’m a writer of fiction, mother and purveyor of food for my family and anyone wandering too close (I’m a feeder). By night… sadly, it’s pretty much the same.
People have been known to not eat for a day before coming to my house in preparation for the hopeless over-catering that I always do. I’ve tried to reign it in, but somehow that makes it worse. I try to limit what I’m making or simplify things and before I know it, I’ve bought a truffle. For no reason. So then I create a reason and the cycle continues. My husband now just sighs and tries to figure out which wines will work with my exciting and possibly outlandish menu.
But mostly, it’s about Christmas. I’ve been banned by my family from doing any preparation before October. The little beasties even said I couldn’t put up decorations before the 1st December. But now I have an excuse – the website! Everyone needs their condiments sorted before the silly season hits. Supermarket relish would be a travesty served with a beautiful ham or turkey. Who doesn’t need to somehow turn a green salad they are taking to their mother-in-law’s house into something noteworthy, possibly with an excellent balsamic in their dressing?
When something extra special is required, for whatever reason, the right condiment can turn a meal from ordinary to spectacular. If you’re going to eat it, you might as well really enjoy it!
